It's funny how you suddenly notice something after decades enthusing over your favourite cars.
For various reasons, I haven't been able to do much in recent months with
Rattletrap, and realised today that he is disappearing into the garden - nature is claiming the car. :omg:
So I went to it and cleared the growth of plants (weeds) pulling him into the ground (a process that takes about 40 years, so don't panic!). Decent summer weather has rendered
Rattletrap no different from the last time I did anything with him, looking just as scruffy as ever, but no worse.
Looking around
Rattletrap I realised that he has no courtesy light switch on either door hinge post. Intrigued I checked my other Split Volksies, and found that on the
Standard type they have the courtessy switches up to and including 1950. But my later Standards, 1951 and 1952 do not, though there is a factory stamped impression where they would normally be.
Rattletrap has the Zwitter body. Elsewhere in this thread there is suggestion made by the VW museum that
Rattletrap may have started life as a
Standard body with Deluxe trim added. There are no grippers inside for a full headliner, for example.
Am I correct that all
Deluxe cars, Split and Oval window have these switches, and that for the
Standard model, VW discontinued fitting them in 1950. I do not have a Deluxe or Standard Oval to check against :?: :?
