Is there any difference on an original VW/VDO-speedometer from 1948 vs 1946? (except for the date code on the back of course...) Both the face and the housing seem to be the same from what I can see - does anybody know of any differences?

Yes, a 1946 speedo has a different drive mechanism and the input shaft exits the body at 90 degrees. From late '46/early '47 the input drive was at an angle to the body much like later speedometers.

I think the dial face and VW tab at the top were more 'blue' than 'grey' in 1948. I only noticed this from the early speedometers I have owned, but I maybe wrong.
