I'm posting this here since, and as far as I can tell, Run To The Sun probably doesn't come close to being a vintage VW event...

From the few people we've bought Beetles from, RTTS (for them at least), holds a lot of fond memories. Being new to the VW thing we only caught the tail end of shows in 2007 and missed RTTS but decided to give it a look in 2008.

After reading this  thread on VZi I'm now less keen to go. On the one hand, I distinctly get the impression that some of the anti-RTTS (or pro-Plymouth Volksfest) people stand to benefit financially if Plymouth Volksfest, which runs on the same weekend, is a success. On the other hand, if what they are saying about the poor VW attendance and the lack of interest from VW stallholders is true, the weekend loses a lot of its appeal for me.

Granted, a Newquay show in June that's open to all and runs music until 4AM isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. I can also imagine a few few Corsa's with 4" tailpipes too but was it really that "bad" last year? What should I expect if I went for the whole week?

If I'm right, RTTS started as a custom car show open to all makes of car. During the 90's the VW gradually took over, however with the advent of the Corsa/Saxo brigade, I think it's recently turned more into a bit of a party weekend rather than a car show. (May be wrong tho' )

At the end of the day, it all depends on what floats your boat. I've never been so can't pass judgement. Given the choice, I'd pick the VW show. But that's just me

RTTS has never been a VW only event, there are loads of hot rods, jeeps, all sorts really - anything on wheels!

There's a movie on their website: https://www.runtothesun.co.uk

I've never been, it's not my cup of tea at all - but if it appeals to you then go! If you'd prefer more of a VW focus then the Plymouth Volksfest would more than likely be the better option.

I took part in the convoy to #2 back in 1988 and stayed in a tent on Trevelgue and have been along lots of times since, the last time being 2005.
I gave up with the campsite when the whole rave vibe took off and usually stay in hotels or guest houses in Newquay.

The show is usually quite good and there always seems to be a handfull of restored VWs which make it along.

I went in 88! More custom cars then and Trevelgue was pre-chav.
It was my favorite vw long weekend away back then! Yes, I even had RTTS(relevant year) written across my rear window  Oh happy days!

I went again in 97 and it was bloody awful! Even though we stayed in a quiet village south of Newquay.
For me it all went wrong for vw's the year Larry, a top guy (from Restowagen) had his absolutely lovely black oval stolen from the carpark  And I dont think the car ever resurfaced?
Personally I would'nt go near it, like most shows, it was great in the early days but that was 10yrs ago! & success destroyed it, ditto Vanfest, even BVF fizzled out.
The irony is that the vw's pushed the custom cars out, and now the chavs have pushed the vws out
There are plenty of vw shows around the country to attend run by real vw lovers that are absolutely great.
From the little I know about Plymouth Volksfest, it is being organised by actual vw enthusiasts as an alternative. Personally I would do the Volksfest and maybe drive into Newquay one day just to satisfy your curiosity.
Whatever you plan dont stay at Trevelgue it will be a nightmare.

I just looked at the site £81per adult!
It's not hard to figure out that it is definitely not a vw event these days, but the vw's are just being used as a 'cool iconic draw'
