That is beautiful!

Interesting that it says it was first registered on 04.09.53- it's a zwitter cabrio so maybe he means 09.04.53? I guess the body would've been built a couple of months before that, so that would probably make it one of the last zwitter cabrios to come out of the Karmann factory. Apart from a couple of minor details, that looks to be spot on. A lovely cabrio, and if it stays at that price (currently 27,550 euros, it's bound to go up a lot more) that's a bargain!

Interesting. I didn't notice the zwitter-ashtray yet. Are there any other clues that this is a zwitter ?

BTW : 30.049 euro now.

Edit : Speedo seems '53 oval to me. Also : on the last picture of the registration papers : the chassis-number seems to begin with 1-05... Zwitter should start with 1-04...
Could it be that just the ashtray is wrong ?

Edit 2 : Engine-number stated on the papers = 20-0608420 (July 1953 barndoor)

How can you tell it´s a zwitter?

I assume it is a zwitter from the ashtray- zwitter ashtrays have no handle or surround. Of course, it may be a later cabrio with a zwitter ashtray fitted...

Did nobody enquire yet about the body/chassis number? You would be able to tell from the window frames if it is a Zwitter or an Oval, but you can't see the detail in the pics.

I asked the seller for chassis-number, body-number and extra pictures.
Got this :
"
- chassis-number = 1-0514xxx
- engine was replaced by VW in 1960

"

The chassis-number makes it a mid-august 1953. First registration date is 4th sept 1953.

My guess is that this auction won't hit the reserve price.

It looks like the zwitter ashtray is wrong, then! It's still a lovely car though

What date was the starter button stopped?

I think it was either on 21st December '53 (same day as the engine went from 25hp to 30hp) or right at the end of December 1953. '54-model year Beetles don't have it.

I checked & the starter button stopped on 21st December 1953.

The Oval cabrio on ebay didn't reach the reserve price.

Has small round heater outlets on the carpet, isn't that earlier than early oval. But think that the window frames look later, as they should be Ally if it's a zwitter.

Hood handle looks chromed as well
You can never have too many accessories on your car. 🙂

The round heater outlets were included up to the end of 1953, so they're correct for a 1953 Oval. '53 Oval cabrio window frames are chromed & the bonnet handle is a one-year-only item (chromed I believe).
