I'm left a bit unnerved to be honest, Andy.

I'd had to car up just before driving it out and grappled both front wheels for bearing king/link pin play. No sign of any looseness at all. Glad I wasn't doing any real speed down a busy road. I've been wary of driving since my head injury last year, and this won't helpUnsure

Other way for me Andy. Body says yes, Brain says no when confidence is shot and anxiety goes upThumbDown

This incident has also cast doubt in my mind as to the sense of the oldest cars on the road being MOT exempt. But the thing is, would the MOT man seen this coming when I didn'tQuestion

Now looking through my collection of brake drums for a replacement.

Another stunt like that from Rattletrap and its into the classifieds the car goesMad

Having a look for a new front drum, pictured here are a few of those I have. There seems to be a few different types involving different flanges around the edge.

The one off Rattletrap (standing up on left) has a flange no too dissimilar to what you would find on a wheel of the 7.50am to Kings Cross, and I don't have one the same. It also has an inner flange that tucks inside back plate flange. The only other double edge one that I have is welded to the back plate by seized brake shoes (the complete one pictured right).

UserPostedImage

The back plates seem the same. Does any one know if different style drums can be used on the same back plate, as I don't want to have to change the whole unit on the car.Question

Well I fitted one of said different flange drums, but I'm left with about 8 mm short of thread for the second nut at the end of the stub axle. The whole of the second nut will not be compltely on, and I'd say I'd be asking for another wheel falling off episode.Mad

The drum is fully back and turns with svery light rubbing noise on the back plate, so I cannot gain any more at the stub axle end. Sad

I take it the old damaged one fits ok? Try fitting the good one from the other side to see if that fits. Wink

Original one removed fits back a treat Andy. I am still amazed at how the thread has completely stripped away on four of the bolt holes of this drum.

Removed opposite (offside) drum from Rattletrap complete with wheel and it fitted to the nearside well with just a slight drag against backplate. Now the speedo cable is long enough to go through the grease cap and both nuts are well on. So this side now done.Smile

Fitted one of my spare drums to the vacant offside and that fitted well too with just a slight drag against the back plate. But same drum would not fit to the nearside properly.Confused

Nevermind, job doneExclamation

The attention of a man passing by my house while I had the gate open was caught by a glimpse of my old '58, Rattytrap, and so stopped to ask about the car. When we got talking I allowed him through to see the car and then he also noticed Rattletrap lurking further from view behind the bushes. He was intrigued when I told him how old both cars were and about Rattletrap's mileage.

It turned out that he was a retired MOT tester with an 'anorak' knowledge of tyres. He looked closely at Rattletrap's tyres and declared they were from 1985. I thought 30 year-old tyres - that's cause for concernOhMyGod

He then looked at the tyres on Rattytrap and dated the front two from 1965 - fifty years oldOhMyGodmg:

It makes me realise that tyres are somthing we do not consider often enough. Just when are tyres too tired Confused

I had a chat with a man at an all makes show this August. Turns out he works for "Vintage Tyres" at Beaulieu Museum and he said 8 years for renewals.Blink

Well I know he could be trying to drum up custom but I bet most of us here will be double-checking that predicted lifespan. I was hoping my set of whitewall were going to see me out. Wink
