Just to keep it clear, the true definition of a coachbuilt car is a vehicle that has had the body built by one company (the coachbuilder) and the chassis and mechanicals built by somebody else.

That was always my understanding of "coachbuilt" too. Method of construction doesn't enter into it.

So my brothers '55 chevy is a coachbuilt because the body was made by Fisher? And the other million and a half fisher bodied chevy's that were made in '55?

What proportion of the body needs to be built by someone else? For a Heb, a considerable amount of the body was still built by VW.

In a sense it is. Fisher were building "coachwork" ie. bodywork, so therefore they are a coachbuilder. A very big one, but so what? Karmann aren't exactly a small outfit.

Perhaps it is just that the term is less exclusive than we would like it to be. Karmann Escort Cabrio anyone?

Dont want to stir the pot but if you take a badly restored Heb, cut out the bad sheetmetal and replace with good sedan split panels and sedan doors. Does that make it a custom car too?

Exactly...I don't understand the big fuss with this issue. It's almost like the Hebmüller and other coachbuilt car owners feel 'threatened' by the arrival of this Rosenstiel.
No one says it's a Hebmüller but it is after all a coach-built car, made on a VW pan like many others. Doesn't matter when or where. People who completely restore KDFs or Hebmüllers in order to undo the wrong that's been applied over the decades and want to return them to their original aspect are actually recreating or reconstructing their cars in a manner similar to what coachbuilders did to achieve their dream.

A lot of people draw a line between cars that are 'stock' and cars that are 'custom', this site tends to be on the stock side. A lot of the skills in creating both types are the same, often the line gets blurred during this process too - custom cars using old steel, restorations using new steel etc.

I like the Rosensteil, obviously a lot of work and skill went into creating it, and it looks cool. If it had been built in the 50's then people would be all over it. Is it a coachbuilt? probably not really, it's a conversion.

Is a Heb coachbuilt? I personally don't think so, pressing an engine cover doesn't count as having the body built by a separate company than the chassis - nor was the body hand crafted by a coachbuilder.

All the lines get blurred when you analyze things too much, which is why it's often better not to do so...

I agree, live and let live. Let the Rosenstiel owner enjoy his toy like others enjoy their own. It's what the hobby's about isn't it?

PS: Rob, how does the 'quote' thing work please?

Which will contain the original posters text, you can then edit that text, to use as little or as much of the original as you like. 😎

Hebmüller actually built wagens and coaches before they workked on automobiles. You can't be much more of a 'Coachbuilder' than that!!!

Ive got to say I am with ET, a coachbuilt was built from a brand new car of the time by a specialist builder/company, not from some beat up 40yr old worthless scrapper by some bloke being creative in his garage. Hell we are all coachbuilders if thats the case!
Just because you give a car an old legit sounding name ( did the Americans start this craze way back?) does'nt make it remotely a coachbuilt of any shape or form. If it was still in its original matt black with red wheels look we would'nt even be discussing it. So it seems a classic paintjob/new look and bolt on's has miraculously turned it into a coachbuilt?

Can I have some of what you guys are having in my tea too?

Still, all that ranting over, it is all interesting regardless! 😃
