Others here may find themselves wanting a new 6 volt battery. Now spring is here we are taking our vintage VW jewels out of hibernation only perhaps to find that the battery has finally died.Sad

Rattletrap is a reluctant starter much of the time, and requires a tip-top condition decent battery to get going. He did have a new battery not so long ago, but I have a few cars all sharing a couple of batteries, and my ratty '58 Rattytrap now has his as I actually use the '58 'cause its the newest car I own.

A quote below shows a fair price for 6 volt batteries as they have become rather expensive. I have had quotes of over £100 + delivery elsewhere.Smile

£70.99 inc vat on collection
£86.05 inc vat on delivery

There are some stronger options available please call for details

He was intrigued when I told him how old both cars were and about Rattletrap's mileage.

It turned out that he was a retired MOT tester with an 'anorak' knowledge of tyres. He looked closely at Rattletrap's tyres and declared they were from 1985. I thought 30 year-old tyres - that's cause for concernOhMyGod

He then looked at the tyres on Rattytrap and dated the front two from 1965 - fifty years oldOMG

It makes me realise that tyres are somthing we do not consider often enough. Just when are tyres too tired Confused

Remember the above post last year.RollEyes

Well, here is one of those tyres:

And here it is now after the car has been standing over the winter:

Note how the tread and edge has begun breaking apart through age, and just standing unused for five months. Just as well to have checked the tyres after the winter standing, and not just driven off down the road! It does raise a question with the pre60 vehicles being MOT exempt.Blink

I leave enough room to push Rattletrap forward or backward about a foot every few weeks, Fernando. But even if I did not move the car for five months, it wouldn't normally cause the tyres to self destruct.Smile

This is how the tyre looks today - it continues to self destruct, even though its no longer on the car.OMG

Facebook have blocked Rattletrap's page. They want to have proof of his ID; i.e., passport, driving license, bank card, student card and so on. As Rattletrap does not travel abroad, does not drive, (he gets driven), cannot have a bank account and is too old to go to college, I can't obligeROFL

What is it with these people, do they think he's a cover for some internet conQuestion

Great also to see some old faces from back in the day. Rod Sleigh, who although was very busy didn't fail to recognise me after the many years since we last met, even with my disguise of glasses and a cap. Also met up with long time friend and once well known VW columnist, Harvey Simpson. We both walked the clever VW trial but some how came off course and trudged back to the VW autojumble field through a rather muddy area.

I certainly know what I've missed in previous years not going to Lavenham. Needed to be there two days to take it all in I think.Beer

It's funny how you suddenly notice something after decades enthusing over your favourite cars.

For various reasons, I haven't been able to do much in recent months with Rattletrap, and realised today that he is disappearing into the garden - nature is claiming the car. OMG

So I went to it and cleared the growth of plants (weeds) pulling him into the ground (a process that takes about 40 years, so don't panic!). Decent summer weather has rendered Rattletrap no different from the last time I did anything with him, looking just as scruffy as ever, but no worse.

Looking around Rattletrap I realised that he has no courtesy light switch on either door hinge post. Intrigued I checked my other Split Volksies, and found that on the Standard type they have the courtessy switches up to and including 1950. But my later Standards, 1951 and 1952 do not, though there is a factory stamped impression where they would normally be.

Rattletrap has the Zwitter body. Elsewhere in this thread there is suggestion made by the VW museum that Rattletrap may have started life as a Standard body with Deluxe trim added. There are no grippers inside for a full headliner, for example.

Am I correct that all Deluxe cars, Split and Oval window have these switches, and that for the Standard model, VW discontinued fitting them in 1950. I do not have a Deluxe or Standard Oval to check against Question Confused

I wonder how many here realise that there is a rear window glass for the split that comes in a slightly smaller size than the norm - well, Rattletrap's are slightly smaller that any others I have.. This seems to be because the rubbers are thicker to take the deluxe trim strip, and unique to the deluxe 'Zwitter'. Handy info to know when you are buying split-window glassesRollEyes

Presumably the smaller size with the Sekurit logo must be pretty difficult to findQuestion
