Hello everyone,

I'm restoring my -59 Ghia, and when I had the engine case steam washed I found out that it has been "painted" in some kind of gold color.
I bought it from the first owner, an old lady, so it must have been done at the factory. Does anyone know anything about these cases and how can I have it redone? :?

Thanks,
Johan, Finland

Hi Johan,
Welcome to the forum.

You are correct in assuming that the cases are painted gold from the factory. This is a picture of a NOS 122 industrial engine block in the same gold finish. I'm not sure how you could replicate the colour, but if I come across any more information I will post here.

The cases were not painted. Its the effect of Cosmoline on the case applied at the factory.

Joe Ruiz in the US does a treatment on his high-end VW and Porsche engines to get this effect.
