Hello all,

I just rescued a 66 bug that sat for the most part of 10 yrs.
I got it started and it ran fine for a few weeks.
But now when I start it it dies after a few seconds.
Extra gas is coming from the float area and flooding the car.
I cleaned the float and made sure all was clean(wasnt that dirty)
Put the carb back on and it ran well for 30 secs or so then flooded out again.
So wahts the deal............. vacuum?
there is also the gas regulator thing that the float hits, could that be defective?

HELP

Thanks

Hi Laggy,
it sounds like the float valve is stuck in the open position, this will allow fuel to be pumped through the carb even when the engine doesn't need it. The float valve is a brass needle valve which is screwed into the carb float chamber top plate.
It may have got some dirt in and stuck so will probably just need a clean out, but I think most carb rebuild kits come with new ones if needed.

I've always found it useful to fit an in-line filter (one of those cheap plastic ones with a paper cone filter inside) between the fuel tank and the pump. Most old VW's seem to have some dirt and rust in the tanks.

Cheers.

I would agree that the needle valve above the float would be the obvious cause of the flooding.

if you unscrew the valve from the carb, you can check it works by blowing through it while pushing the pin in and out to see if it cuts off.
