When I had my 1948, I had posted a message on the website of REME's forum of retired service men, in the hope they might be able to help with some research I was doing into the history of my car. I have just received an email from a certain Norman'Sandman' Ingram who unfortunately couldn't help with my car in particular but remembers his days at 31 Arm Wksp Rotenburg near Bremen. This photo, from his album, shows him next to his REME Oval in 1955, with Army registration DIXJ47. He clearly remembers how the VW were simply all over the army bases!

Did he bring it back with him and hide it away in his garage?

You wish, Malcolm! So do I for that matter...funny how these army ovals seem to always have a sunroof like this one...  oval.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.

Great pic. One of my parents friend's brought one (split I think) back and showed me a similar pic of him in his uniform standing by it years ago, but I was young then and not really interested in such an old vw! and never see him now   :d
