Hi All

i have a few questions and your help would be much appreciated!

 I have just joined having just purchased this car. The last family/owners had it since the mid eighties and have had work done to keep it on the road; i.e mainly welding. Its pretty original (with a few accessories added)Original engine with 116k on the clock.

The car is 6v and the intention is to keep it as original as possible. With this in mind are there any paritular issues with keeping the car 6v? (the dynamo (6v) was replaced about three years ago.

The car hasnt been on the road for three years now and the engine was last running a few months ago (so im told). i was told that in order to get it to run last time they had to put fuel directly into the carb they say everything else in the engine was checked and appeared to be ok (carb/fuel pump) i need to get the battery charged and try this out, but any ideas on what the problem could be? Blocked petrol tank or fuel line? Do these tend to be a common problem? any suggestions on how to check these? and how easy is it to replace the fuel line?

The bigger 'issue' is the end flaot - i would say that there is at least 3mm of play on this. Firstly is this a big problem? 2)can this problem be fixed? or 3) should i just replace the block with a new recon unit? The car also came with a block from a 67 (i think)which looks like it hasnt been touched for years but the flot feels ok. Im by no means a mechanic but as mentioned above keen to keep the originality of the car but want to have a reliable engine. (So would need to have it all checked over and work done by a mechanic.

The ideal (preference) for me is to have all the worn parts/problem areas etc replaced ect so i have a good working (original)engine but if you think this is a waste of money and i shold replace the block let me know.

What do you think i should do?

Can anybody also recommend a good garage/engine specialist in Suffolk/North Essex please?

Many thanks for all your help. (sorry about the long email!)

Cheers, Nathan

Welcome to the forum Nathan. We need to see some photos of your car :d As for getting her running i have found that if thay hafve not been run for a long time then the starter dose not turn the engine over fast enough for the petrol pump to pull the fuel from the front to the back. So remove the airfilter an pour petrol down the carb ( about 1/2 an egg cup )and crank till she fires she will no doubt stop so you have to keep doing it a few times. Also make sure the petrol is good in the tank. But before all this check to see that you have a spark at the plugs. Best of luck and dont for get some Photos

Many thanks for your prompt reply Andy. I will try this in the next few days. So do you think if i do this a few times and get him running this will deal with the issue?

Im struggling to get the photo uploaded at the moment so will try again in a bit!

if anybody has any ideas on what i should do about the end float/engine replacement that would be much appreciated.

cheers, Nathan

Hi hope that sorts it for you :d The end flote is exsesive but run her an see how she gose. If the clutch seems ok ( the crank is not moveing so much that the clutch wont engage) then depends on how you want the motor. If i remember you can fit shimms behind the flywheel to adjust the free play but i guess some one on here who has just rebuilt an engine will tell you. Carnt see s photo yet

Nice  So whats the list of jobs to do to get her as you want?

3mm of end float is quite a lot. I would suggest getting the engine up and running first like Andy says and once running, take it out for a rebuild. If the engine is original to the car, it is definitely worth rebuilding rather than finding a replacement engine.

Thanks for advice Rich. I definatley want to keep the original if possible so will go down this route of having the engine rebuilt.

The list of jobs to get him back on the road include; a bit of welding to the floor pan and rear quarters, treating some surface rust, giving the interior a good clean up, checking the running gear and giving him a good polish! Hopefully back on the road in the spring.
