Can anyone tell me - what if anything should be behind the tar boards in the engine bay of my '57?

Just that behind the boards are a mix of foam and that fibre sound deadening stuff....

The '57 i had until recently had the tar boards straight onto the painted steel bulkhead/engine wall.And it was a very original car.
