Hi guys, does anyone have to hand any pics of a 49' standard to post. As some of you know i'm new to the vintage sceen and as yet i do not truly know what my 49' should look like. It is either black or bordeaux red im not sure yet?

Any ideas on interior trim/colour, door handles, wheel trim etc would be appreciated as well, as i cant seem to find any way of truly knowing what should or should not be in/on my beetle.

Whilst im posting i have some good news! I have managed to strike a deal and in the next month my shell should be reuninted with its chassis. now how lucky is that?  15897.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.

Rob,
I wouldn't really reccomend that car as an example, it is full of inconsistencies. 1949 is such a year of transit and changes and this one is a bit of everything.
Wrong hubcaps (up to 47 only), a post-May 49 bonnet but pre-May 49 bumpers, rear view mirror and engine decklid.
Wrong taillights for both pre and post-May 49, these are for 50-52, wrong horn, this one is for a 50-onwards car, if the car is a pre-May 49 it should have a rivetted pope's nose and the paint should be satin and not gloss if the car originally was a German homemarket car.
Not trying to slag the car off but Lee should get the right facts for that difficult year.

I did think about the accuracy of the car as I had noticed a few wrong bits, but then I thought from where he is now its probably a good start. Finding detailed photos of a '49 isn't that easy!

Your knowledge of these early standards is far greater than mine, already your comments are showing Lee what he's let himself in for!! 😃

If Lee has a chassis number now, we should be able to pin point a date in 1949 for him? :?

Hi thanks for the interest. Yes, i did know that i was letting my self into.......... a "minefield".
Some of you are very passionate about these early cars, its a bit too heavy for me, please remember im new to all this vintage stuff. I think it would suprise a few of you if i told you my car was already 35 years old when i was born! :? Im amazed the knowledge that some of you have, but this can wait untill later. All i need at the moment is an idea of where im going with my 49, i will worry about light bulb wattage differences and hubcap changes etc in a few years. I hope you dont think im being ungreatfull and can understand my present position in this restoration.
Im a bit reluctant to give the chassis no as i dont actually legally own it yet, but i figure i need to in order to progress, so;
1-0-132 757
I think it is a late 49, but who am i to guess?
It is either black body, bordeaux red chassis, or visa versa?

Your car was built in the third or forth week of November '49 making it a 'late model' (that's good news as far as parts are concerned!!)

If it is a standard model, it would have either been Pearl Grey or Dark Blue. The chassis would be Semi-matt Black.

thanks for the info
I think the car was a standard, but i am not 100% sure is there any way of finding out from the chassis no?
I have just recieved a certiricate from the; Fahrzeug indentitats-urkunde der stiftung auto museum volkswagen. signed by Dr. B. Wiersch
Says build 25 nov-29nov 1949
destination, Kaiserslauntern, Germany
L51 red (bordeauxrot)

what is not clear is weather this denotes the chassis or body colour?

Hi Nicolas,

Just a minor correction, hope you dont mind  The hubcaps on this '49 are the cog logo type upto '45. 45-47 hubcaps are the same nipple type with the later VW logo, I need 4 of these for my car if anyone can help (repro or original ok).

Cheers
Kev

If the birthcertificate says the colour L51 red your car is a deluxe and the colour is the bodycolour.

Also from the look of this picture I think I see the sidetrimholes which also tells that it isn't a standard...

yes it does have the trim holes, but i thought these were drilled in at some point. the doors are not original it looks like it was easier for someone to drill holes in the body rather than smooth over the doors!?
I have also been told that as there is no hook/hole (i cant remember) in the roof sides to hold the head lining this points to a standard?

Either way i think il stick with deluxe bordeaux red, after all its my car.
I have the body number somewhere, i cant get the the shell at the moment as its burried behind 3 cars and all my work tools as im building a new spray booth to take 2pack equipment. would i be able to find any info anywhere using the body number?

As for the hubcap correction post, come on get out a bit more, it cant be healthy? i understand you probably posted it as you want people to have the correct info, i dont know maby you couldnt sleep untill youd corrected the mistaske. either way you should chill out.

I no, was only joking, im no better my self. I think its really good that you guys are so passionate about these old girls, if it weren't for people like this with all that knowledge we'd be stuffed. Good luck by the way in your search, ive found a chap called Wolfgang Gitz who sources parts in Germany, although he specialises is Kubles & 181's he may have some caps. I'll let you know his email as soon as he sends it to me.

Any way back to the point, can does anyone have any pics for me? I really want to see a deluxe bordeaux red, deluxe black, standard black. cars. I know you guys could draw them in your sleep but please remember im new to the scene and only 22 so even a 67 bug is unfamiliar to me. I have a 1985 rs turbo even this is old to me!

Kind regards to all that have helped me
lee
