I think that's exactly what happened. I think this is far more plausible than somebody accidently filling the engine bay with sand.

One thing I noticed about this pic... Is that a thick bezel tail light??

Cant tell iff it is a thick bezel on that one.

What I do know is that it is a early one....in fact I can tell you that it is a heb that is made before or just after the fire in the factory..
The give away is the "rounded" top of the firewall when you look from left to rigth. you see a curved top.
After the fire, but I not know when, they made these firewalls
more flatter. It is like that on the first 50 cars they made.
Correct me if I am wrong..

Peter it has also the rectangular pressings where the licenceplate is mounted what you mentioned in some earlyer topic.

Also has the hole and the bumper bracket for a starting handle too. 😎
