hi,

ive just got myself a 66 project with plenty of bits missing and plenty of work required, what im after is information to begin with,

example: the bug has ball joint front suspension and 4 stud brakes all round, i was under the impression that pre 67's were king and link pin with wide 5.

could it be a cross over model thing or that someone has 'upgraded' at some point?

thanks in advance

Hi Andrew! :d

Your right, pre 67 cars should have 5 stud king and link pin beams! That is apart from 67 1500s, unless im mistaken! Unless your car is a 67 year model (changed from 66 year model in august) car then it could have these bits!

What reg is your car? E or D?

king and link pin was up until 1965.
your 66 is correct with ball joints.
should have 5 stud wheels though.
5 stud wheels remained until 67. 1966/7 had slotted rims with flat hub caps.

thanks for the replies

its a D registration.

really wish it had the wide 5's as they look so much better.
does anyone know if its just a case of changing the drums, or is it a lot more than that?

Some really late build '66's on D plates had the 67 model 4 studs. I have a couple of mates with these features as per factory.

IIRC its simple enough to swap back to wide five drums. Direct swap with the correct parts. `66-67 rear drums are a little wider, so don´t try to use earlier ones.

thank you all for the replies.

will certainly consider changing to wide 5's even if it did come from the factory as it is now.

Hi Number 6,
I too have a 1966 beetle. it's the 1966 model/ july 1966 manufactured so has wide 5 wheels, ball joints etc. Are you going to keep the car 6 volt? If so.... i might have some parts you may need as i have converted mine. Also have some seals/ other bits.

It would have been 6 volt as standard, my car is a December '66 ('67 model) and it is 6 volt. Many have been converted to 12 volt over the years.

Please post some photos of the car 🙂
