These are a bit of an unknown territory to me being a Standard model Split-window collector – cable brake cars.

I've now added a Deluxe model Split-window to my collection :shock:

It has stood over 12 years and the brakes are completely non-existent, all hydraulic fluid gone.

Where's the best place to start? Hoses, pipes etc all seem okay. I've put brake fluid into the reservoir and pumped the pedal but the fluid does not go down into the system :?

Presumably I need to open a connection at a wheel cylinder to let the air escape and allow the fluid in :?:

I know that once the fluid goes through I'm going to have to bleed the whole system to remove all the air.

Someone out there been in this situation :?:

I assume you have the bleed screw loosened at the corner that you are working on?

Not down that far yet Gertie :arrow:

Got to get the juice into and through the master cylinder :arrow:

But maybe I just need to open the system at any any of the wheel cylinders to get the fluid running, and just repeat the same for the other three 😮

I'll then find out where all the jammed cylinders, split hoses and rotting seals are :?

None of this with Standards 😎

Relieve the pressure behind the master cylinder by opening up a bleed screw on any corner.

Otherwise where can the fluid go?

If I were you I'd consider replacing/rebuilding the master cylinder and wheel cylinders. The rubber in these can perish over time and with single circuit brakes if you have one leak anywhere then you lose all your brakes :shock:

From experience i would start by taking the master cylinder out and remove the pistons for cleaning or just buy a new one if there is any rust inside.The fact it had no fluid in it means there will be rust formed in the system.At the very least change all the flexible hoses and either change or strip down and check all the wheel cylinder rubbers .Cylinders are so cheap for later cars i personally dont think it makes senses to rebuild them.Check the shoes also for contamination .It may seem like a lot of work but i gaurentee if you dont go through it all it will cost you later in one way or another.

If it has been many years as you suggest... I would:

1- open up all the wheel cylinders and strip them down to nothing... remove everything
2- if they don't have any corrosion in the cylinder chamber then blast all the crap off of them and paint them black if you like. (don't get any paint where the brake fluid will live)
(if they are corroded... even a little... then throw them in the trash buy new ones)
3-if they are not corroded then hone them with a special little honing tool you put on your electric drill.
4- install rebuild kit bits and put them back together
5-Clean up the adjusting stars with a wire wheel... grease them with some white grease before re-installing.
6-Replace ALL flexible lines
7- If there is ANY rust in any of the hard lines I would replace them too. I have had "blowouts" of hard lines twice (usually in the long line that goes front to rear)
8- buy the little rubber caps that go on the bleeding valve tips... to keep out crud and water... manually bend the little keepers that hold the stars back where they are supposed to be... so that they actually hold the stars rather than let them spin.

Read the manual on bleeding brakes.... you'll need a friend to help.

1234 applies to master too...

The little hone tool is usually available at most auto parts places.

That's thorough overrestored :!:

All this hydraulic stuff certainly makes me pleased that most of my VWs are Standard cable brake cars :beer:

Hydraulic for daily drivers – cable for collectors, occasional use.

My 1949 split has stood for best part of 23 years – the cable brakes work fine 😎

I've bought several sets from Framptons. Very helpful, quick turnaround and very reasonable prices too!
They do the white or silver plastic digits as well...
