A few minutes ago I suddenly remembered a photo I had seen a few years ago of a Belgian registered 'all original' '48 split.

A quick Google and I found this, it looks like the same car to me. The shot I remember seeing a few years ago was of the drivers side door, open and you could see the original wax paper albeit torn covering the door panel.

Anyone got any more photos/info? It's clearly a 'known' car as it attends shows, although rarely.

..and before I get jumped on for calling it 'all original', I think it had an accident many years ago. I'm sure I remember reading something along the lines of a new front wing and bonnet.

Where I got the photo form, this also confirms accident damage. The owner also posts up.

:omg: This a stunner (well to me anyway).

I love this quote from the site – my sentiments exactly, it can never be repainted.8)

'I’ve spotted this car for the first time at a Vintage Volkswagen meeting in Belgium. A 1948 Split Beetle from Belgium, all original and unrestored! Amazing, isn’t it? The complete history of this car is known. The car once had an accident (front left side) in the early ’50s but was repaired with correct an original parts by a VW dealer during that time. They did a great job back then because you could not see it was repaired. The rumour goes that the current owner will keep it like this and will never restore it. This is what we call precious metal!'

That is a great great car.
And the guy won't sell that one either:wink:
It was found in storage in a scrap yard, the guy knew it was special and locked it in a shed.

Is that the '48 that was at the Lier show in Belgium in 2008 or 2009 (actually I'm sure it was 2008 as I went to the 2009 event & it wasn't there). If it was then I think someone posted up pics of it somewhere on this very website...

Found the photos! It was our late friend Guido who posted up the link on this forum to his photos. They're here:-

I think it's the same '48.

I think it was someone else's photos, I distinctly remember a shot of the drivers door card, with the door open.

Some really great photos of Guido's in that link.

One of my all-time favourite cars. As George says, the current owner Jean-Marie Verhulst found it in a scrapyard in about 1990, under cover since the early 70s. It was involved in an accident in 1949 and several panels were replaced- JM still has the paperwork for the accident repair from what I recall.
I also asked JM if he would sell the car a few years ago, the answer was 'no'.
47 Beetle, 56 UK Karmann Cabriolet, 56 UK Beetle, 57 UK Type 2, 59 UK Beetle, 66 UK Fastback.

In 2009, I've had the pleasure to do a a photoshoot and a 10-page article of this car for Boxertje magazine. I was very, very impressed by the originalty of the car, there's no other 1948 like this believe me...

And yes, JM was in Lier with his car in 2008 and in 2009. In fact the '48 has featured on the special Vintage Show flyer for the 2009 edition.

Several panels?

It looks so og, but it was only a year or so old at the time of the accident I guess, so virtually new. How many KMs I wonder. Is it early enough to be a 3-ribbed inner rear window.:?

Still love the way it looks.

Another JM that won't part with their 1940's jewel.

Special indeed. I love the 'summer winter' setting still marked on the fan housing.

I love this car, so I hope I can make a couple of comments on this gem without starting a riot.

I think that the speedo cable is a later one, about the only thing that is :!:

At what point do you do something to give protection from surface corrosion. That is always a difficult decision and I have that constantly nagging me with my '49. Maybe the owner of this '48 keeps it in one of those 'Carcoon' things. I just keep mine covered with Waxoyl.

For me, 2009 was the last Vintage Show in Lier. I'm glad that my initiative (first edition of the Vintage show was in 2006) has proved to be very succesful. 2009 was absolutely fantastic, with about 100 original Vintage VW's and a type 166 Schwimmwagen in action at the end of the day. I resigned as a member of the board of the club at the end of 2009 and I'm not actively involved in the organisation of the VW Classics Meeting & Vintage Show anymore. In case you would like to follow up the clubs latest event news, please take a look at the website www.vwclassicsclub.be
I'm sure the site will be updated soon
