Hello Fellas

Anyone going to the Goodwood breakfast club tomorrow?

https://www.vintageseekers.com/calendar/goodwood-breakfast-club-tax-free-sunday

It 's Tax Free Sunday for all cars prior to 1973. Not sure if I'm going in the Oval or the '72 yet, either way it would be great to see some more aircooled VWs there.

Wayne.

It was a good show, it always is. I like these eclectic shows where there is a mix of Classic Cars. There was a good scattering of Aircooled VWs, mostly type 2s but a goodly number of Beetles too. I took my ’72 Marathon Beetle and parked it in the paddock, as coincidence would have it, a lovely Silver ’72 made up in Formula Vee Livery parked right next to it.

There were a couple of nice early splits in stock fettle, including a local ’58 and a very original pale blue 62 De-luxe Microbus. It appeared to be in original paint and thoroughly unmolested.

Of the other beetles that attended, most were 60’s sloping headlight models but unfortunately pretty much all of them had been hit with the lowering stick. Nice shiny examples though non-the-less.

There always seems to be a good number of Porsches there too and this Sunday was no exception, there were some fantastic examples of 1950s and 60s model and a surprising number of early ones were RHD.

A highlight of the breakfast club is the bacon and egg rolls made from organic pork from the Goodwood estate. Very nice.

There was a great selection of 50s, 60s and 70s cars of all Marques and models. I enjoy looking at cars that would have been available on the forecourts at the same time as my Beetles to see what choices the buyers were faced with. I like Morris Minors, but looking at the build quality and antiquity of design it’s clear to see why the Beetle shone out in the world markets. It’s interesting too to see some of the few 70s British cars that have miraculously survived the last 30 years, the Morris Marina and the Mark 2 Escorts for example There was even an early Capri, but no Austin Princesses. Terrible shame that.

No photos I’m afraid, I’m hopeless at remembering to take photos, hopefully someone else off here will be able to post some.

The next one up is Soft Top Sunday on 3rd of April. Hopefully see some VW Kabs there keeping up the Air Cooled side!

Mike

Edit: This is a link to a page of photos from the November Breakfast Club, the theme was Germnan Marques. My Marathon is in about the 7th picture down. Will have to take the oval to the next one.

Thanks John, it's had a very easy life. It was my Dad's car, he bought it off the original owner who was a family friend who had bought it new for his retirement, he put very few miles on it and sold it to Dad when he gave up driving. Dad kept it as a second car, just taking out in good weather and to the occassional show. I took it over about 20 years ago when Dad felt he couldn't justify keeping two cars any longer.

I haven't used it much although I did drive it to Bad Camberg once and some years ago I toured Scotland in it with my partner. For the best part of the last 10 years it was kept in my Father in Laws garage in Suffolk, kept road legal but rarely venturing out.

I now give it a run every couple of weeks provided the weather is fine. But the oval is my real passion. The Marathon seems so very modern!
