Can anybody help me with what maybe a stupid question?

I have a 1965 deluxe beetle which is pretty good for it's age but not quite standard thanks to previous owners. (It had a fair bit of work done in the early 1990's by well intentioned people but maybe they weren't purists).

I've owned the car for a good while now and am gradually returning it to standard.

The numbers on the gearbox and chassis (under the rear seat) match as does that on the VIN plate, all true to the 1965 vintage.

These numbers are confirmed by a VW "birth certificate" I ordered from the factory 7/8 yrs ago.

On a swivelling inspection cover under the bonnet - front driver's side - I have a four digit number stamped which appears unconnected to the chassis/engine/gearbox numbers.

At the risk of being a bit thick, please could anyone tell me what this refers to.
