Congratulations! 😎

Do you know what the body number is yet?
It's stamped on the panel behind where the spare wheel sits.
From this you should be able to find out what month in 49 it was built.

Hydraulic brakes wern't introduced until April 1950 so it should have cable brakes, if you want to go for originality! πŸ˜ƒ

Yes congratulations!

I was going to post last night, just buy what ever car you really want, it is all supposed to be fun after all!

I'll tell Owen, he wont be bothered at all.

By the way, get your hands on this book:
'The 1949-1959 VW Beetle' 'Authenticity Series by Bob Wilson'
You can order it from vw books:
https://www.vwbooks.co.uk/
You will find it incredibly helpful, with parts photos and year by year changes.

Some one is coming to see the Floorpan over the weekend.
I've been waiting on him to come to his caravan here in Wales to take a look.
I'll let you know if he doesn't take it.
It is a cale brake pan.I have an old service manual actually gives all the measurements and instructions to convert to hydraulic if needed.
BBT Bob has a 1950 pan for sale.

Congrats!

Just be careful on the Bob Wilson book. There are alot of errors in there!

Ask lots of questions and get a few books. Progressive refinements is a good one to have as well.

Again, congrats!

I've heard this said before about it. I suppose any detailed spec book is prone to this problem unless its a genuine Volkswagen book like Progressive Refinements.
Spec books are a good starting point but always want backing up against looking at real live & correct original cars! ( Which is far more fun than book trawling)
Fortunately my car is a happy jumble sale of parts so I havent been so bothered anyway, but it's nice to know what 'is' and 'isnt' correct even if you dont apply it!

the other problem is that whenever VW changed something, they often used up all the old parts first, its not like American cars where they brought out a specific model each year. There are a lot of inconsistencies

Ive never been into reading, but i'll have a look at some books. Unless i can find a 49/50 chassis i dont think i have to be too regimental when it comes to finer details. As you say there are so many irregularities anyway!? So come on people find me an early chassis, 49 is best. Then you can keep me on the stock path that you all want me to take!
George did you have any luck with your chassis? Let me know as im picking up the shell on wednesday and its half way to wales!(twice in one week).

Thanks for letting me know. Im looking into that 50 pan from BBT.

Does anybody know how i would stand bringing over a forigen chassis for my 49 shell. As i seem to remember someone saying it was difficult to register with out an MOT when doing this sort of restoration?

Come on guys help me sniff out a 49 chassis, there must be one somewhere.

Lee, you can't register a car in the UK without an MOT, insurance and, if you want an age-related plate you will need proof of the age from Volkswagen or a recognised expert such as Bob Shail. (He charges a small fee for writing these letters.)

Have you found out what the body number is yet?

Just a thought...

Was your '49 once registered in the UK before it lost its chassis?
If it was, and you can find out what its original chassis number was from VW or a previous owner etc. you may even find it's still registered and you may be able to keep the original reg number!

The body number is 84263.
Ive been given the contact details of a Dutch man who purchased the original data plates for my 49 shell, so fingers crossed he may sell it to me??:o Wouldn't that be great!!
As to weather it was registered in the uk, im not sure yet. Ill have loads more info by wednesday, as im picking up a load of spares i bought, that the seller had collected over the years for the 49. πŸ™‚
I think i made a mistake saying the car was originally black, i think it might have been boradeux red, what a result either way, both beautiful colours!

The shell is home in my workshop. I Must say for a 57 year old car its amazing, theres more rust on my cement mixer then this. Just shows how good the quality of metal was in those days!

My initial thoughts, well worries are that as one of the doors is a replacement from an oval, so someone thought it was easier to drill holes down both sides of the car for the chrome trim rather than just fill in the one door! I say this because there are no locating holes for the interior headlining which should mean its a standard not a deluxe, therefore not having chrome bands outside???? :? am i correct?

guess i'll have to end up buying one of those books, ive never read a book in my life!

Good news, im on the case of tracking down the 49 chassis that my shell came off, so i may end up with the whole car. How cool is that!?

If it was a deluxe, it would have the clamping strip around the door opening to hold the full headlining.

A standard just has the small middle bit of the headlining so no clamping strips around the doors.
