Okay Julian.

I've had a dig around, and these are the pics of LOW from 1977 taken with a '70s pocket camera :!:

This was my collection – not bad I suppose as a student – 1972 GHW 405K (almost mint then) 1951 349 GMO and 1953 LOW 514. Photo marked – not LOW's back end:lol:

They were the days 😎

What, only worth £200

You'd not get a badly rotted '70s Beetle for that today :!:

The car was very original, including the engine and yes, I bought that tax disc 😮

Shame so much of the car has been lost – no excuse for this  This puts a bit of a downer on the car for me

I'd still be very interested in having it back now or some day though. and you can be sure I'll give you more that anyone else – maybe do you a deal on an earlier car – these cars are generally not for sale, I've owned them all for years

Don't paint or refurb the interior or let some vulture have the registration

Why's this under a big-window thread:?:

It is a shame that he lost so much of it.. I do have a couple of boxes of bits with it and the seats etc...

there are 2 engines.. both dead.. I now need to find a whole load of the correct steel to rpair it with!

I really do have no intention of selling him.

But, you are welcome to make any offers you like.. you never know!

Can't believe all those bit were 'lost' – possibly sold or donated to another car :?

Headslights were UK.

LOW's in good hands now

He came with US spec head lights!

I'm going to have to find decent original early replacements for those too!

Items like the windows were aparantly left outside the garage and just "disapeared" on bin day!

The wings he threw away!

I dont get too upset about these things.. I'm just greatful that someone stored it all this time, it could have just been scraped... so the fact it survived, with scars.. is better than it being gone for good.

I just want to get him back together and the right shape!

Was there a lock on the fuel tank cap?

And the washer bottle attached to the dash?

There was no lock on the fuel cap. The washer bottle was on the dash though.

I hope you still have the rear heart lights – unless he's lost them down the back of the sofa

Yes it's good that the car has survived at all:wink:

Interesting to note that all 3 of my Beetles in the first pic above are still around 32 years later:!:

GHW 405K is still with the same person I sold it to in 1978, and still in daily use, I have 349 GMO back and you have LOW 5148)

This says so much about VWs.

Amazing photos John. About 349GMO, I have an old picture of it given to me by Bob Shaill a long time ago. On the photo it was dark blue. When was the colour transition made? It is a Standard isn't it?

Was GHW a “World Champion” (Marathon) Beetle? I still have my Fathers “World Champion”, it was entered in the concourse at Stoner Park in about 1997 and lost to the “Gemini” Beetle by a small margin. Other than a trip to Bad Camberg in ’07 it’s hardly been out of the garage since.

I think it’s due for a run!

It is Standard model Nicolas, although many years ago (1981) it was built into a KdF82E by Mr Shaill, and that is how it still is today. It makes a smashing ornament in my back garden 😎

When I brought it in 1977 it had been painted light metallic blue, Mr Shaill was the person who eventually painted it back to the correct dark blue in about 1980. He must have got bored and then decided to build it into a KdF, of which I have to say he made an impressive job. GMO eventually turned up in north Wales in 1990 a little forlorn and I dragged it back home to London. It has been with me ever since, the first Beetle I ever went out to buy all those years ago

As you can see from this thread, my love of Standard model Beetles goes back some

Love to see that picture 😎
