I know this subject was talked about last summer, so sorry to bring it up again.

I think its time i got the car a registration, its it as simple as going to the post office and filling in a form, or is there more to it with a car of this vintage.

Secondly can i choose a registration, or is it a lottery?

You need to get it MOT'd first.
I dont know if you have any paperwork, but I would suggest that if you have no 'documents' of any type, get a birth certificate from VW in Germany, to help. About 15Euros.
Stiftung

It will surely get called in for inspection (unless you did have a stash of original documents for it)
They will inspect it and then it will get issued with a plate from the current pre-reg series that is running, you can't pick.

It will be something like : 569 UXS (made up but the UX very likely)

But after it's reg'd you can put something else on if you wish, but it will have to be a pre-reg transferable plate ie. original old. ( usually not cheap!)

But you could get the DVLA forms from your nearest office to start.

Lee,
Has it ever been registered in the UK before?
If it has, you should be able to apply for a new registration document based on the chassis number, which should give you its current registration plate.

As Anna says above, if it hasn't been registered here before, you will need to prove it's age based on the chassis number and the easiest way to do that is the birth certificate from the VW museum. It has to be MOTd as well.
Also, if it's been imported, you need to prove that any customs duty abd VAT has been paid or you may get charged again! I'm not sure if there's a time limit on this so you may be okay?

I've gone through all this a couple of times so far with the Heb from Belgium and my 914 from USA. They inspected the 914 to check all the numbers matched the docs but didn't look at the Heb.

I'm sure Anna and Owen have been through all this many more times then me! 😃

Yes i do have some history for the car, a VW birth certificate, and the original customs and excise importation document. They are not to hand but i think the car was imported in the early 80's, so id imagine theres a chance it has been registered here before.

Time to make some phone calls i think, i'll let you know what i find out.

MOT, well thats awkard, i was trying to get it registered now to aviod delays later on, its going to be a while before its ready for the road!!! Though am i correct in thinking if its registered already, i can re-register it using the old details with out an mot?

Shame about the reg was hoping i could choose 203 LEE, as my wifes name is ZOE, would have been a nice jesture and maby she'd like the car a bit more, oh well.

Oh yes, sorry! I forgot the car has been here a long time already and that you have both the body and pan back together now so technically the whole 'original car' again!
:D

Lee, if it's already been registered in the UK you shouldn't have to re register it. Just call the dvla and explain that you've bought a car which has been off the road for a long time and it's missing its number plates and documents. I'm sure if you have the chassis number they can comfirm that it's registered. If it was registered in the 80s though it might not have had an age related plate. It might have been on a W, X or Y or something.
Also, If it's been out of action for that long the number could have been re issued.

Anyway, a call to the dvla should sort it out.

There is no custom duty if the car is from within the EEC.
However, DVLA now charges £38 as a registration fee ( a new way to extract yet more cash).

Yep in case anyone else is in the same situation, i need a V55/5 Form and £38.

Looks like i need to re-register it. I was told by a lady at the DVLA i need to give them a reg number to see if the car is registered on their data base. Bit of a catch 22 really. Oh well another £38 to help put up more speed cameras or what ever they do with it (certainly not spent it on improving road surfaces).
