Coincidence or not but just today I bought 1 piece of running board trim of a split window beetle! There were still remains there of the clips of the running board trim.
The cilps inside the trim looked very much like the black one shown on the photo! I told my friend seller that it was the first time I saw this clip on a running board! An old parts book was used to check this out! The book showed us a clip mounted with bolt and nut just like the black clip above!!
When I bought the split I own now he was in unrestored condition with one running board with trim still there! The running board clips on that trim looked like the yellow one showed above!!!
May this be the difference between pre50 and past50 running boards?
I will go and have a look to the publishing date of that parts book, maybe its telling me more!!
As soon as I know more ..... I will be back!!!

This is the info I've found:

From September 1951 the trim pieces were attached to the running boards by clips. Previously, they were attached by screws. Sixteen clips held each running board trim in place.

(From The 49-59 Bob Wilson book)

Hope this is of help?

No...there should be 8 on a side. Not 16.

Yesterday, Etzhold1 and I, heb623, saw an early 1950 split somewhere in Begium. Guess what? At each side the car had 8 screwed on clips(black ones as shown) at the trim of the running board!!! Like Kevin said it was on 19th of september 1951 this changed in the clips we know now (yellow ones as as shown) Thanks Kevin your the man!!!
