How do you use the quote button properly on here?

I click on the button (top right of the original post) which imports the entire post and then delete what I do not want, but then my response to it ends up in the same white box :? Should I be using the Quote button on the reply page?
Not even tried quoting two lines in the same reply post yet??

You have to watch out that you don't accidentally delete one of the quote brackets - [ - when you delete unwanted text.
