Hello everyone
I am new here and I just purchased two bugs to restore.
I know it is a big task but i am recently laid off of a 16 year job and my desire is to put history
back to work for us
My bugs are older than 67 and i beg you don't throw me off of here due to that but I have nowhere to turn
I can not find any information without the fear of just throwing my computer lol
Here is my problem
In my 77 bug i have an engine with a engine number of AE652153 and in my 70 bug i could only read the first
letters which I believe are AK
Can any one help me out an identify what kind of engine they are or point me to a site that will
Thank you oh so very much for your help
I do appreciate it very very much

wish me luck on my journey
Debra

I think my car is just totally messed up
it is the 1970 bettlewith the 111 chassi but has a Ak motor which seems like the numbers after the letters have all been
scratched off. why i don't know
then i read it may have a auto-stick trans but my lever moves only front to back with a
little string rod that pulls up yet it has a clutch
okay tell me
how bad did i mess up getting this car
i am so so lostmy other one however is a 1977 with a ae engine and it is running
any thoughts
and please no insults. I am just trying something new and everyone has to learn somehow

The auto stick - if I remember correctly - should have a clutch, but its electrically operated, when you move the stick. I´ve never even sat in one though, so I can´t help you much beyond that.

Beetles aren´t complicated cars. If you change the oil, the spark plugs, the points, condensor, set the valve gaps, clean out the carb if its been sitting around, maybe also a new fuel pump and filter, then it should at least run.

Try and get hold of a copy of this book....

Hi, welcome to the forum. Firstly, this forum is for VW's made before 1967 and I try to keep it strictly on-topic. I sincerely apologise for sounding brutal, it's great that you're trying something new.

it may be that you have a custom gear stick thats been put on, something like this:

The auto-stick trans has a gear lever but no clutch pedal if I remember correctly, so if you have a clutch pedal it's not one of them. Most probably your gear lever is in the wrong place, try undoing the two bolts and moving it sideways and see if its any better.
