Finally got this ready for the MOT and took it for a test spin. Went well until the clutch pedal hit the floor and didn't return

Long story short, thrust bearing clip failed (badly fitted 😶 ); so engine out, new clip and all was well, until it started popping and farting and spitting from the exhaust.

Went through everything ignition wise, fuel etc until it was found that the spark plugs were the wrong type  Mine isn't a ''true'' 1500; the PO changed it for a 1600 😳 , so the plugs for this are a longer reach type. Thanks to Doug Fish MacGregor for helping and Robb for your input :d

Now it runs like sh*t off a shovel; MOT booked for Saturday morning!!! Hopefully it will pass and it'll be back on the road for the first time in 22 months

After 22 months off the road, and lots of cancelled MOT appointments after what seemed like issue after issue  I managed to finally get the car down to the MOT'er for a test last Saturday...... and the fecker passed

Had quite a few nice comments whilst down at the garage from the blokes there and one or two customers on how nice it was, which makes it all worth while.... 😎

Took some pics of the underneath for the perves to drool over 😛. It's not ''correct'' I know alongside the likes of Roy Wilson's, but it's the best I can do with limited cash, and another 67 is saved :d

The weather's is just about perfect, so time to enjoy it and get some miles on the clock

PLUS...........

After 5 years of ownership, I even managed to get the interior courteousy light working tonight too. Funny how little things like that make you happy

Cheers. Will post the radio soonish.

I haven't let on so far, but this 1500 has a 1600 in it  For some odd reason the PO changed the original 1500; said it kept breaking down every 5 miles.... bet it was something simple

The good news is, it's been done OK, and it's a genuine VW engine not a recon.

Happen to know someone with a 1500 67 engine who wants a straight swap for my 1600; what should I do :?:

It would be nice to put things right...

im always out for originality, when i bought my 62 ragtop ten years ago, i removed the 1600 that was fitted and found a correct year 40hp motor.

But then i can understand you wanting to keep it , if its brand new. Is it a singleport? if so, you could make it look like a 1500 by using the 1500 air cleaner etc 😎

Hello Robb,

The 1600 was fitted a couple of years before I bought it, so it's about 7 years old. It's a Mexican engine, with all the VW stamps in all the right places, so not a recon, Vege, Remtec etc.

It's a twinport and has the 1500 air-cleaner on it. I'll post some pictures of the lump when I get a chance.

Tempted by the 1500 offer though :d

Did a few more bits tonight.

At the weekend I cleaned up the vinyl carpet in the rear luggage compartment and on the back seat.

Sprayed up the 'bar,' which secures the carpet to the back seat, and got my little girl to spray up the screws with a bit of silver paint :d

Put it all together and fitted this beauty..... 😎 Almost wet myself with excitement

Here's a pic of the 1600; for the 67 perves, how '67' does this look? It's got the 67 air cleaner on; a 1500 would be great, but if folks like Robb think it's looks the part, then I may keep as it's running sweet 😛

Did 75mph on the M1 last week and passed a few surprised folk

I have an old and as far as I can tell, original oil temperature gauge on the dash - see below picture beneath flower vase.

UserPostedImage

A wire leads back from this and terminates under the rear seat; this has been cut off in the past by another.

Does anyone know how I could get this working and what type of sender could be hooked up to this? Also, I guess I'd have to make sure that the gauge is set up right, so it reads the right temperature...

Any help would be great :d

I used to be very, very anal, but I've learned to compromise

I'd love to return it to 1500, and it's not going to cost owt either - straight swap for my 1600 and I know the fella very well, he's spot on actually. However, the 1600 is running schweet...

Is there anything that can be done to '67-ify' the engine more?

if you've got a chance to do a straight swap and get it back to a 1500, sounds like the ideal opportunity! You can bet that if you want to get it back to a 1500 in a few years time, you won't be able to find one anywhere...

if it was me, id be swapping those engines over. 1500's dont come up that often, as most people put them in their 1200's.

Get it done :d

Have had a poke around tonight and the gauge is a VDO unit  and I've traced all the wires and identified them. A company called Davidson in the US sell senders, so I just need to find out which one of the many they have, will do the trick. There's also Speedy Cables in the UK who might be able to find a sender.

I'd like to see if the gauge works first before I send it off the Speedy Cables, HOWEVER.... the gauge is a 6V unit, and my Bug has been converted to 12V. I'm sure it's an original part, and I don't want to run the risk of knackering it by running it 12V
