This is my first post, so please be gentle!

I'm an experienced metal worker ( I build aluminium bodies for vintage and classic cars for a living) . I have recently bought a project '66 beetle which needs a few repairs to the shell.
My question regards the way the rear quarter panel is welded to the outer sill ( where the running board bolts to. I want it to look factory as the rest of the body is unwelded perfection! In the past I have mig welded it, but I'm sure that's not right!
Can anyone advise me, preferably with a photo or two please.
