Whats the best kind of paint to use on my gearbox? I think that most paints just flake off the alloy don't they?

Thanks.

Hi, I'm in the process of restoring a 66 and I’ve just painted the gear box. I used hamerite black satin paint which i mixed 2 to 1 with thinners and sprayed with a gun. I could have used a brush but didn't want to see any brush strokes. The preparation needed was a full clean down with paraffin to remove gearbox oil and road mud then clean with brake clean fluid in a can followed by a wipe down with panel wipe which removes oil and dust before painting. The end result looks great!

Ive tried hammerite..but as you say it flaked off within a year of use! That was despite followinga similar procedure to rybeck's!
I think FROSTS www.frost.co.uk do some paints and primers that would be suitable, but I dont ahve any experience of them!

To keep my '58' true to factory I did not use paint, A good clean up followed by a thin coat of 'Dinatrol' waxoil to stop oxidation. It dries pretty well and gives a lovely factory look.
If you are referbing the box (strip down) you could get it vapour blasted to bring it up like new, then waxoil it.
