Hi all been a year and a half since i sold my 1949 standard, but am back in air cooled ownership.

Have just bought a 1967 lotus white 1500 model as a project. (missing wings, engine and interior)Sorry no pics yet, the car is not home for another 2 weeks:(

Problem is its got drums all round?

And has what I can only assume had the later 4 stud drums fitted.

The front beam has been cut around and lowered crudley!!

I always thought a 1500 67 should be wide 5 pattern and have disks up front?

If it's a real 1500 it would be 4-stud with discs up front and a ball-joint beam.

My 67, 1500 has 4 stud wheels and disks up front. I think the US 67 retained drums all round - is yours US spec?

Yes its an original 1500, part of the reason I bought it as I know how sought after the 1500 gearboxes are!:d

I just found out after a bit of hunting that the 67 1500 was the first beetle to have the 4 stud wheels.

So looks like the rears are stock, Its just the front i need to find more info on.

As said its got drums, but I believe they should be disks as standard.

US spec? How do I tell this, what other pointers are there to look for?
Its RHD so im guessing US spec is highly unlikley!

Id like to get it back to stock spec ideally, the cars only done 41k, and is a beauty!

Sorry for the questions, never owned a 60's bug before!

The US spec version had upright headlights but a long bonnet, but as yours doesn't have wings thats not a good way to tell. But being RHD it's not going to be US spec anyway.

Most likely is either someone has swapped the front axle for one with drums (why?) or someone has swapped the engine and box. Or it´s not a 1500 box!

You can easily put it back to discs and they and rear drums are readily available with Porsche bolt pattern.

How do you know it's a 1500 Lee with no engine and no disc brakes?

I am buying it from a good mate who deals in vw's and 2nd hand air cooled parts, I was in the market for another vw, and he just happened to have this come in.
The owner couldnt afford to restore it, but took the engine out to use in his T2 bay.

Shame i know, but thats the story. Anyway its defo a 1500. The car is not back for about 2 weeks as im still trying to finish off an old escort ive got first. So sorry no pics as yet.

The front beam had had some very crude welding done to it with some swayayways, so all i can think is the whole front bean must have been swaped, as i cant see any reason for loosing the disks!

Hi Lee,sorry if i'm a bit slow on the uptake, but who bought your '49?

Alright George, long time no see.

The 49 standard went to a guy called Chris, a young guy around my age, up near Ipswitch. I have tried to contact him a few times to see how the car is coming on, but have had no luck as yet. I do hope he did the car justice after god know how many hundreds of hours i put in, and sourcing parts from all over europe.

Wish id have kept her really, but she was just to bigger a project at the time (well as you know all i started with was a bare shell and naked chassis. not even a nut and bolt in sight!) But there we go, I had no choice to sell her at that time, just wish finances were better back then.

Since the 49. George your going to love this....I had a mint low mile 1993 Escort cosworth, 1992 Golf mk2 GTI with a VR6 engine, and also just finished an full restoration on a 1971 1300 orange beelte.

And am now just getting ready my Mk3 Escort RS1600i for MOT and up for sale.
Bought it in febuary and did a full restoration, for this to happen.............
https://passionford.com/forum/general-discussion/302026-rs1600i-caught-fire-today.html

Also rebuilt the Aston Martin engine - see link if you fancy a good read
https://passionford.com/forum/restorations-rebuilds-and-projects/277992-aston-martin-dbs-with-lots-of-pics-and-video.html

Anyway to stop waffling, im now steering back towards vintage tin again.

Was looking for a nice oval, but this 67 came up at a good, mates rates price and was too good to turn down.

Oh!Sh*t.
Shame about the car, some on here think that should happen to all escorts:lol:
But when that much work has gone into something,it's never nice to see it destroyed.
I hope no body was hurt.

No one hurt, just my wallet and a big kick in the balls after a heavy restoration, guess waht i bouhght this car as a shell also back in febuary of this year  .

Well that was just over a month ago since the firs and Im hoping to have the car booked in for MOT next week 😛 Had to basically source everything again, which was a pain as these are actually relativly more rare than 1949 beetle parts!

Anyway Ive finally seen the error of my ways, As you know when i first joined the forum a few yeares back, i up set a few people with my 50/50 love of fords and VW:twisted: But Ive finally mellowed now and am laying the RS habbit to bed.

One thing im sure even you will be proud of is even tho it an RS ford, I have built it a is 100% original, correct from the fuses right down to the colour, make and model of the shock absorbers:wink:

On a good side the £4k im hoping to get from the RS1600i, will go nicley towards a barndoor van ive longing after!8)

Ill get some pics up of the 67 as soon as its home

And if you (or anyone reading) know of my old 49 Id love to see where shes at now, I just so hope he carried on with the stock restoration as I was doing. Not many 49 standards left!
