Well, the top shock bolt sheered off the oval  I've tried all sorts to try and get the broken bolt out - including heat, stud extractors, drilling etc but it's just not shifting. Drilling it out so far has lead me to the conclusion that there's no way I can accurately drill and tap it with a hand drill, so I think I'm going to have to replace the front beam - unless anyone has any suggestions?

I beleive the usual way it to try and weld another bolt onto it and undo that. The heat build up helps break it loose too.
Or drill the middle out starting with a very fine drill bit and work up the sizes.

Tried the welding technique with no success, so then tried the drilling technique - but my fine hole is so sloppy I don't see it being anywhere near accurate enough for the atlas mountains...

Sorry to say this Rob:oops: but you learned a BIG LESSON this weekend.
Soak everything with Plus Gas,even if it takes a week before you try and undo them.
I usually tie a piece of old rag around the item and really soak the rag,any penetrating liquid will do.Walk away ,go back twice a day and soak the rag, maybe upto five days later you will feel it freeing,be gentle.

Chris did this with the same result.
He took his beam to a local engineering works and they drilled it out for him, £20.

Everyone is upto it.
Give it time you can't expect to undo a bolt, after maybe 40 years, without some prep.

Good idea the rag not tried that. I always have an assortment of small rusty items in my kitchen with a can of WD40 and every time I make a cup of tea I squirt them. But then I suppose it helps that I dont have to worry about the wife complaining about the smell of WD40:?

I have og wheels in my kitchen but a beam I think is a no no :?

I am sure you will fix it Rob :d

Buy PLUSGAS or another penetrating fluid.
