One super clean, original, unrestored and very low mileage (kilometerage?) 62. First paint, naturally! This is one of those cars that you need to look at to see how these things really were when they came out of the factory. I´ve seen very few cars this nice.Photos don´t do it any justice.

And then there was this car - best of show for me. It´s a 1949 Export and this was it´s first drive in 30 years (on some seriously rotten East German crossplies!). The first of the Export cars, although it still had cable brakes. It had been owned by a film studio in Austria and used as a prop, until the studio went broke and everything was auctioned off. The current owner bought it at auction about ten years ago, but hadn´t done anything with it until now - but he had promised the show orgainsers that he would bring a split Beetle along. He said the worst part were both rear wings which had to be reconstructed using some parts from some spare split rear wings. Aside from that, a new sunroof cover (the old one was in tatters) and a replaced rear valance, it was pretty much as it left the factory. I asked if he had done much to the motor. "Nothing" was the answer. "Well, I cleaned the carb".

The silver Cabrio wasn´t actually an Oval. It was a later car with a few early panels.
Oh and re the other thread - the "Karmann Kabriolett" badge is screwed onto my car, but the screws are little half round headed ones.

The original screws on the 55 were half round head's but we couldn't find any that matched so the closest in length and thread type were used.

Did they already made split ragtops in 1949?
But a very nice car!

Really? What is it then? I find it hard to tell the difference. I know thats a cabrio lid with the two extra cooling slots.

One of the first apparently. Someone else asked the same, but there´s no way it had been put in afterwards. You could have seen it as the headliner was hanging down, and there was no sign.

Oooookay, it must be a 1970 then!

The 26 slot lid may have appeared on hardtops then, but Cabrios had the extra two slots from 1970, from cars I´ve seen in person and as far as I can tell from scouring the net. It´s certainly not a Mexican part, though they may have used something similar later on.
