Digging through some old photo albums I rediscovered three photos that were given to me by someone who called in at the workshop in 1984. Apparently the vehicle was discovered in Holland and was verified by VW as being one of only nine that were made in this body style. Year of manufacture: 1939. I'd forgotten all about this story until I found the pics again tonight. Does anyone know of this vehicle and whether or not the 1939 KdF story is true?

I saw this car to on a meeting in Nuenen/Holland!
But I was told it was a one off.
It used to be a war beetle that was converted into a delivery truck by an unknown body shop for a baker in Paris after the war!
Does this help?
Who knowes?
I nearly bought it but I didn't!!!
Big mistake not to buy it because it was cheap in terms of today!
But not back in 1984!!!
It was a lot of money for somethung nobody liked to have!!!
Is it still there?
I have some pics of it somewhere to but to find them is another matter!

From what I recall (from many year ago), it was based on a 1945/46 Beetle and not a '39. No idea where it is today though.

Having trawled through lots of old images and books from my late Father's VW litrature hoard, I'd say that this car cannot be from 1943. The KdF saloon body was open behind the spare wheel. The spare was fixed to a bracket, and when you removed the spare, apart from the bracket, you could see the front axle. There was a small panel facing you on each side of the boot which carried the KdF logos, ID plate and fuse box.

The car pictured on this thread has the flat panel behind the spare wheel, a feature introduced late 1945/46. Internet searches also confirm this.

This is what I'd think, though '47-'48 is a possibility.

The real story about this car:

After the WW2 they rebuild this car with parts from 1946/47 and a lot of parts from other cars .
So it is correct there are parts from a later beetle on the front but the rear end was self made and not even close to VW.
What i told you about the car is true "it is based on a KDF beetle 1943 "
Floorpan : 1943
Gearbox : 1943
Front axle : 1943
Wheels : 1943
Steeringbox : 1943
Steeringwheel: 1943

All the parts are date correct

The car was offert in 1984 for to much money at that time .ET has the price correct around the 500 euro.
After 10 years it came again on my way and i buy it.
So we start to collect all the original parts to complete this beetle
I dismantle the car complete and now he is in restoration.
Many parts i have found yes even 2 engines 1 date 11-42 and 1 date 04-43 this is the one thats go's in my KDF beetle
Some small items are missing but no problem we keep going

When you are interested in the restoration of this car take a look on Facebook KDF volkswagen and look at the pictures in my albums

I hope the mistery is now solft

Thanks for the replies everyone! Must admit I had doubts about it being a 1939 car (as I was told originally) but an interesting find nevertheless.

Good luck with the restoration Nicolass.
