This is a view of the big air-cooled V8 Tatra 87.

Makes you realise how uninteresting things are today?  6513.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.

I thought this picture of a Tatra T97 chassis that I have recently seen on the web may be of interest to some of you. You have to admit, it looks very familiar :!:   7478.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.

I thought this study of my new toy – my 1937 Tatra T87 with the VW prototype might interest some of you :?:

This car has the huge V8 rear air-cooled engine, the car itself is a fair size too, larger than the VW Beetle and my Tatra T97.  12043.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.

What Beetle nut wouldn't want the prototype :!:

It's a fact with Beetles, the earlier they are, the better they look.

Why ever did they not keep this roof line and run it through the split rear window :?:  12293.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.

Im not really a beetle nut. i only bought my 49 because it had a split window and well 49 just has that edge on a 50's car.

I think its great that you have a Tatra, must be so nice to have a car that you know probably only a handful of people own and drive?

I agree with you vw should have just put in a window and kept those lines, I guess mabe because metal and time were short, this is one reason they lost that beautiful shape.

Was looking at some pictures of george lloyds 50 kab last night in a thread on 'The S*%$a', from the rear 1/4 view there are definatly strong echos of the prototype with that long sweeping rear.

is there a link you know of with more pics of the prototype, my little brain is ticking over wondering how hard it would be to make one either that or i buy a GT40 Replica. :?

That's an interesrting answer :!:

I also originally became interested in early VW's because I loved the split rear window. All the car's other charms grew on me later. If Beetle production had started with the oval or larger window I'd probably never have got into them. Would I have missed out :!:

Maybe there is an edge on having a Beetle from the 40's as opposed to the 50's, but for me the edge is having a split rear window as opposed to anything else.

The early Tatra's really are something, maybe it's the look on people's faces when they see them! (Or mine when I drive them). But even so I'd love a VW prototype (replica of course).

Is there a company out there that could build accurate VW prototype replicas, I'm sure there would be some customers if the price stayed within reason.

Nice pictures the two replica Beetle prototypes are shown on www.kdf-wagen.de/main/main.php - See the Lottermann 2007 feature

Technically, 1950 belongs to the 40's decade. (1941 -1950)

Im not really a beetle nut. i only bought my 49 because it had a split window and well 49 just has that edge on a 50's car.

thats insane!? Is this some weird way of describing "technical" prodcution runs?

for example, obviously a split built on the 2nd of jan 1950, was most probably started in 1949. But i think you are missing the point 1949 is in the 40's decade 1950 is in the 50's decade, thats why i went for a 49 standard as someone said to me last week the last beetle before they started improving it for export.

if you were born in 1970, you dont tell people you are from the 60's.

Sorry if im sounding rude, maby because ive just been on the samba and im in that frame of mind of disagreeing with everything, nit picking every point and having a better answer than everyone else.

i looked at many 50 & 51's but finding one from 1949 was so much more satisfiying because its a car from the 40's
